Supporting LGBTQ+ geoscientists, in and out of the classroom

Many LGBTQ+ people feel that their community is not visible/represented in geoscience, and LGBTQ+ students report being unsupported.

Best practices for inclusivity are proposed:

  • incorporate research conducted by LGBTQ+ scientists into lectures;
  • shut down homophobic/transphobic comments;
  • signal allyship – e.g., safe space indicators;
  • staff know university LGBTQ+ resources;
  • instructors planning fieldwork be aware of potential dangers/harm to LGBTQ+ students and plan rooms considering all genders;
  • celebrate achievements of LGBTQ+ staff and students.
